When I send out my email last week to the Calgary Belegarth people I included a link to www.belegarth.com as a refresher for what Belegarth is, (as some of them only attended one practice last year.)
I looked at www.belegarth.ca first, but it didn't quite have to polish the .com does. It's starting to look professional, and it's way better than what we had on googlepages, but it's not quite there yet. I'm not sure how much of this Cib can fix, or what tool you are using to make these pages, but if you have time there are a few things that I think need fixing:
1.) White on white. There are a lot of sections where there is white text on a a white background. Some of these are because the background fades out, (the top picture where it says "home of Canada's Medieval Combat Sport".) Some of these are links that are light grey when visited, and white when not visited, ("See the Rule Book" on the players page.) Finally some of the problems stem from backgrounds not fitting the box they are in, (Schedules, left box.) This is not just limited to some things being invisible, (including some grey on grey text.) A lot of the site is hard to read because the text is too similar to the background. adding an outline on some text, and changing the colour to a slightly more contrasting shade on others will help here.
2.) Drop shadows. These work in Internet Explorer but do not work in Firefox. They also slow down the site in Internet Explorer incredibly. Don't use css to make drop shadows. Put the drop shadow into the image and it will work faster and in all browsers.
3.) Home page. The .com site has a description of what Belegarth is on the first page people see. This in important. Most people won't know what Belegarth is and more importantly, search engines won't have any text to key on. If you enter "medieval combat in calgary" into google belegarth.ca should be on the first page, (and the Calgary site should be there too, but that's a different topic.) The way to get into the search engine is the have lots of text that describes the things that someone who might be interested in belegarth but doesn't know about it would search for.
4.) Related to #3 with search engine optimization. Don't use frames. Search engines hate them.
5.) Again on search engines. put in a tag similar to this on every page: <meta name="Description" content="Learn the steps on how to become a licensed real estate associate in Alberta from the Calgary Real Estate Board." /> This tag goes in the <head> section of the page and should be customized for each page.
6.) alt tags. I see a few alt tags that are empty. Every image on the site should have an alt-tag that says the same thing as all the text in the image.
