K, so here's the deal;
I'm an SCA fighter and I do WMA as well (with wasters and rebated weapons). With my SCA combat, I'm used to swinging pretty hard.
I notice that you guys wear less armour, and I'm just wondering if the padded nature of the weapons, and the fact that they're lighter than SCA weapons, is enough to compensate for this, or if you guys swing with less force than I'm used to.
I have fought with padded weapons in WMA groups before, as well as just kicking around with my boys, and we have always fought full speed/force, but I don't know if that's standard for you guys.
This looks like a lot of fun, and a few of us are interested in coming out to play with you all, but we don't want to hurt anyone or anything.
Maybe hooking up with one of your experienced fighters in the area and sparring some? That way they can show us your standard gauging, etc- and we can get a feel for your weapons.

I think Mod is the only one of us who has tried SCA fighting (I have been meaning to give it a try for a wile now but just haven't found the time) so it is hard to show, I expect we hit a a bit lighter that you usually do, though the weapons are designed to work just fin with a SCA stile full force swing. I know there is lots of Belegarth SCA cross over players (both ways) across our two sports, we all like fighting and each one emphasizes different things. But we would probably have to get togather to really figure out for ourselves what the difference is.
What is WMA? I don't think I have heard of that one yet, is it like the AES?
I would totally be up to getting together to spar with you guys some time, and I am sure some of the other guys would be as well.

WMA is a catch-all term meaning Western Martial Arts- I'd be better to use HEMA: Historical European Martial Arts- ie., recreation of period fighting techniques. Usually that means wooden wasters/rebated weapons but some groups also employ padded weapons for full-speed freeplay. AES is an example, so's ARMA, and AEMMA out in Ontario.
I'd love to get together and throw some shots. I'm in Canyon Meadows and have a nice big green space to spar in if we wanna find a day to get in a fight or two and a beer or three.

From my time in the SCA I don't see any difference in swing strength between our sports, (although I was only in the SCA for a few weeks, the helmets gave me headaches.) The SCA uses a different ruleset for hit zones, most notably the head, and there seemed to be a different fighting style too, (Belegarth is more open and fast paced, SCA seemed very duel-centric.)
If you are worried about swinging too hard, don't be. We have had people leave the ground because they were hit with an upward swing. Other than the no-headshots rule I find Belegarth to be more realistic in it's fighting rules. If you want to hit someone from behind with no warning, go ahead, they won't get injured, they don't need to brace for it.

Currently the Calgary group is on a winter break but the Airdrie group is going strong, (although the Airdrie group's members are mostly teenagers.)
If you can make it to Airdrie on the 26th, (tomorrow) you can try it out, (although due to the age range the Airdrie group doesn't hit as hard.) Otherwise I've been planning on starting up the Calgary group again sometime soon, what time would work for you guys?
