I have the strip of velcro from an old pair of ski boots that I threw out. It's pretty durable but I really don't know how well it will work. I also have a cloth belt that I think might be strong enough. Probably not enough for all the shields anyway, but might work for some of them.

I used belts for my shield but my fastener cut through one because it wasn't as strong as I thought. So next time I'm going to go with my vegetable tanned leather from Tandy which will be 100 times stronger.

Some of those cloth belts (like i have on our big shield) are really strong, but are pricy, probably not much different than leather.

I just went to totem and looked at plywood prices. 48x48 was $8-$20.
I also think I miscalculated the fabric. Is it usually priced by the yard or the foot? I think I guest by the foot. If it is by the yard it is probably closer to $20-$40.
So this looks a bit more like this: Foam: About $200 Wood: $15 Glue: $60 Fabric: $25 (assuming $6 a yard) Total: $300 Per shield Total: $37.5

Based off of their recommendations I'm building a round shield. Wood won't cost me anything I had some already, I have a stash of sheets so I'll probably only be using $2 worth of fabric, now I haven't traced it out but it should only take up one long roll of blue foam(based off of how my last shield worked out) $16, some glue, t-nuts and bolts was a few dollars, straps I'll make but if someone wants some belt leftovers those will make a lot of straps. My shield is only going to cost about $22. I have enough wood for two or three more 24" round shields which I will donate to anyone who will use it(two layers of 1/4" plywood).

I cut foam yesterday and discovered I didn't have quite enough for the whole shield so add another 2 square feet of foam to the cost(the shape of my other shield must have allowed for more efficient use of foam), and a few dollars for t-nuts and bolts, I am trying them out, so far pretty good.
