I am just dreaming here, I don't have the know how or money to make this happen, but it cant hurt to dream. Let me know what you think, and if you have any ideas for making it (even a part of it) happen.
Recruitment mini site
When you first arrive at the site you are greeted with a slick sporty looking welcome page with a quick description of the sport and site. There are only a few buttons, one send you through a few pages and videos that will will get you hooked on the idea of the sport, the second will send you to the second half of the presentation and get you connected and tell you how to use the site. The third button will send you past all that to the real site. (so basically this first part is a recruiting mini site)
The main site
I would like the actual site to be very much hands off and user maintained, like a wiki. The site would allow users to create articles for several categories (Players, Spectators, etc) as well as post news. The main feature I would like though is a map feature.
Maps
The map feature would mean a fundamental switch in how things work, from realm focused and based to event based. It would allow for more ad-hawk practices, and allow casual players to stay connected without having to attend a weekly if they are unable practice. Hopefully this would help reduce the turn over rate that is so chronic in our sport.
I would like several maps with several layers that could be switched on and off.
-One map would show every players home location.
-One map would show practice locations.
-One map would show event locations.
Players map
-Players would be encouraged to sing up and join the site. When they did they would be added to the map.
-They would then have the option of subscribing to several different lists. For example they would be asked "I want to be notified of events with in ___ km from me" the would chose a number according to the distance they are willing to travel. And "I would like to be notified of new and updated practices with in ___ km of me" and chose a distance that fits.
-If a player does not log in or visit the site for 6 or more months the map would only show them in the "inactive" layer
Practices map
-Anyone could set up a public practice to appear on the map, anyone who set their practice notifier with the new practice within that range would be notified of the details.
-Every month the practice would need to be "re-activated" or it would fall in to the Inactive layer on the map. Any site member can re-activated at any time. This keeps the map current.
-The practices map would have several layers, "active practices" would be the default showing practices that have been vouched for as active within the last month. Other layers might be "show practices active in last 2 months", "show practices active in last 6 months" and "show all practices"
-Any members could attach themselves to any practice member list so people could PM them with questions about it.
-Players would also have the option of contacting everyone with in a certain radius with an invite to discuss potential practice times and locations before set one up.
Events Map
-The events map would function very much like the practices map, any member could crate an event and anyone with the correct subscription radius would be notified.
-any member would be able to attach themselves to an event as attending.
-Once the event date has past the event would be filed in to the "past events layer"
-Layers on this map would be more like a calendar so that players could select the first week of july and see all the events by geographic location in that time period.
-Events would be color coded, a color of each month for essayer navigation.
Thoughts? ;D
