so i thought i would start a thread to discuss how to beat a sword and board combo with different weapons. any ideas? 1) Two weapon: Use both weapons offensively, not the same one only for offense and the other one for defense. You have twice as many attacks and they can come from different angles. Also, if you position yourself so that his shield is directly in front of you, i.e., you're slightly to the right of your opponent's centerline if he's a right-handed fighter, you can have his shield help you. To get to you, your opponent now has to swing past his shield. 2) Red sword: Aim to hit the person, not the shield. It takes two hits to break a shield and then another to inflict damage. If you hit an arm, leg, or torso, even with armor, it only takes one hit for damage. 3) Spear: Carry a backup weapon. Keep the person at range. Target the legs. Learn how to do "sewing machine" attacks. The normal response to a spear is to charge in past the head. As a spearman, you have to be conscious of your range and try to keep him at that. If you have a backup and keep your lead hand on the spear palm down, you can turn the spear into a very tall shield and do a wrap or leg shot as he charges. To do this you let go with your back hand, draw your backup with the back hand, and pivot the spear so that the pommel is pointing to the sky. 4) Glaive/polearm: A bit of both spear and red sword. You still have to control range but now you can either stab or slash. With a glaive you can also choke up to be more effective at close-in fighting. 5) Archery: The two most available targets when a shieldman is charging are his head and his legs. Be careful about targeting the head as he can often get within 15 feet very quickly. I usually aim for the person's legs as that will immediately slow down his movement. 6) Dagger: Be sneaky. Don't try and get into a stand-up fight. If you do, you have to use the dagger, and as an extension, your hand to block his weapon. You have to get in close to be effective so range control is critical. Hope this helps. P.S. If you can make it to Chaos Wars, I'll be teaching classes on weapon checking, basic shots & combos, shield work, footwork, archery, and tactics.

If i might add for red sword, aiming for legs is great, then go for destroying the sheild then they are easy to pick off. but that usually works best for 1 on 1 duels.

okay so Gothmog is probably starting this forum because i have a sword and board. but yeah i would suggest going defense. wait and block, wait for any opening and don't hesitate. block the shots that come at you, don't be afraid to step back and retreat a few meters.

FLYING DRAGON KICK!!! Er, shield kick him Improve and use your wrap shot to his him in the back. Leg him if you can, then the shield kick/bash becomes more effective. Break the shield = hes done. If you can bait him into swinging then grapple his sword arm, you could have the dagger and end it.

Break the shield= hes done is not always true. most people who use a shield can also fight without it, the the shield kick thing doesn't always work either. i have had bout 3 years of martial arts training and i know how to hold me ground and not move when someone is kicking you.

A proper shield kick should aim for something like the lower outer corner, the idea being to lever the shield out and open your opponent up to a shot.

just a quick thought here. defeating any type of weapon combo comletly depends on the person/people fighting, many people have diffrent styles. so you cant get the thought in your head of "oh that person has a sword and board, and i beat them, so i can take anyone with a sword and board" just a thought
