I would like to try this sometime as it would look good for cheap and also protect you a little bit but not so much that you can't feel hits. You could even have it as a part of loaner garb. I don't know if it would stand up to Belegarth strength hits. Obviously a more medieval design would be required.

hmm, that's a great idea... where do you think you can find this foam?

In the video he used interlocking foam mats. Those you should be able to find at any big box store. I'm sure a lot of other stores carry them as well.
