Here in Canmore, we have vast mountains, fields, forests... but no LARPing community to take advantage of this. I've never LARPed, well only with my friends. But I really do wish to get into it. Whether it be foam swords, or full viking get-up with chainmail and a gambeson to allow wooden training swords. I would love to see a Canmore community start up. My name is Alexander Vincent, and my email is Avncnt@gmail.com if anyone is interested, post here, email me if you know some people, we could get in contact, I can even make a facebook group to make it more accessible. If anyone from the other locations would be interested in helping us out, or give pointers to have this start up successfully, that would be great too. Thanks - I hope this is the right place to post.

Personally I would not classify Belegarth as a LARP (Live-action roleplay): There's no roleplaying involved. From my experience, it's more of a combat sport. If you're in the market for trying out a sport with foam swords, Belegarth is probably what you're looking for. The cost of entry is cheap (A weapon runs around 30 dollars and will last you for quite a while) and the sport is fairly easy to learn. If you're looking for wooden weapons, full armor and that sort of thing, you may want to look into the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism). Due to armoring costs and safety concerns, the cost associated with SCA will be much higher. For a minimum kit you'd probably be looking at spending around $250.00. Even more if you want the full armor rather than just required armor, and even more if you want to look authentic. If you're looking for a LARP in the traditional sense (Roleplay, spellcasting, storylines, characters, as well as combat) check out Amtgard, NERO, Darkon... Or many others. Try a search for "Alberta" on this page and you might be able to find something within an hour or so of you: www.larplist.com/mainlist.php?op=worldlistI don't know of anything specifically in Canmore / nearby, but if you've got people interested there's no reason why you can't start up your own group based on whatever rules system you think best suits what you're looking for.
