a helm I'm wondering about making at some point is one that looks like this: I won't bother with the denting to make it look metallic though. Looks like a band of leather you wrap around your head and a circular piece fitted to fill the top, with flaps that hang off the sides, (I would put some on the back too.) I'm thinking of using the instructions in the water hardening/shaping section at the top of this page: www.pbm.com/~lindahl/cariadoc/perfect_armor.html to do the shape of the top piece and band around with wings. The flaps on the sides and back I'd use the same thickness leather, (tandy sheild/armor leather) but won't harden. or you can go for one like this tutorial it looks fairly easy: www.armourarchive.org/patterns/leatherhelm_gerhard/

Cib the thread you linked recommends a dead link, and also references the link I posted here...
Although I think I linked to the first part and the "improved" version linked at the top of that page might be better.

Hm... by looking at a lot of different sites that reference that same dead link I think I've pieced together the system it recommends:
1.) preheat oven to 180 F 2.) immerse leather in water for 10 minutes, some sites say as hot as you can hold your hand in, some say room temperature will due. 3.) shape leather. 4.) place leather on baking sheet, (aluminum is recommended) 5.) bake leather at 180 F for 30 min - 3 hours, (just until it feels dry) 6.) let leather air dry for 2-3 days before use

Hm... this whole thread should probably be in the armor forum not the garb one... oh well.

i was planning on making kinda like the last one you linked, only diffrence is it will more be a mask, and not have a full helmet, because like you said it will get really hot in the summer
do you think if would be nessacary to put padding on the inside, like just around the forehead area

I know a lot of helms have padding... Sometimes simply to make it fit better. I would think it would also help with impact a bit, but am not sure. Usually it is just blue camp pad from what I hear.

I know for a fact that my helm sure needs to have padding. wearing it without any would make not comfortable at all. Besides it would not fit without any.
